Prom

Tonight is The Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute Gala aka the Oscars of the Fashion world. This year's theme is American Women: Fashioning a National Identity' is being hosted by the queen herself Ms.Anna Wintour, the queen of talk Oprah Winfrey, and Patrick Robinson head designer of The Gap. A perfect trio to represent the highs and lows of truly American fashion. I am eagerly looking forward to seeing lots of  designer collaborations with the Gap including Rodarte, Sophie Theallet, and Alexander Wang.

Last year's exhibit, titled 'The Model as Muse: Embodying Fashion', was a fascinating adventure through 21st century designers and their relationship with supermodels. Can't wait to see what this year's curators have in store for us.

Radiant Crown

Without question, studs were one of the knockout trends shown by designers last season. We saw them fly from the A/W 2009 and S/S 2010 runways onto every possible place incuding bags (Alexander Wang, Balenciaga), Jewelry (Burberry, Noir), Jackets (Bess, Christopher Kane), Denim (Current Elliott, Alice and Olivia) and Shoes (Balenciaga, Gucci).

Now, there is yet another place we can ornament ourselves...On our heads! This Givenchy by Ricardo Tisci spiked headband is the perfect edgy New York girl item, but with a $500 price tag, is a little steep for a hair accessory. 

My friend S however, had an absolute 'I want it I need it' moment and almost took the plunge...Thankfully, she came to her senses--no glorified barrette is worth half your rent. This was the perfect opportunity for a little DIY! 

(Note: You should know that fashion students love a designer DIY like Derek Z loves an orange mocha frapp)

What you'll need:
Headband (Try any accessories store)
Black leather (Try trim/fabric stores)
Studs, 6 big spikes, 5 flat squares (Try trim stores like M&J)
Glue
Pliers
How to:

1. Measure the leather so it is the right size to wrap around the entire headband
2. Measure and mark where you want the studs to be. Start at the temple with a big spike and alternate with flat square studs.
3. Press the studs through the leather. Depending on the thickness of the leather you may need to use pliers.
4. Once the studs and spikes are firmly pulled through the leather, wrap the leather around the headband and glue into place.
5. Allow the glue to dry overnight.
6. Wear it out proudly. Ignore bridge and tunnel creeps who tell you you look like the statue of liberty--they don't know shit.

Deadly Sin

I lost my camera this morning. It was the fashion gods punishing me for stealing Olivier Zahm and Terry Richardson's cab after the Wang show.

I thought it a little harsh. Thankfully the gods agreed. Camera found.

Post Wang Post

I showed up early in order to avoid the groupies outside. This ended up being the best idea I’ve had all week. Not only did I beat the crowds outside, but I got to watch the entire run-through with Alex himself sitting front row as his girls strutted by. Really amazing to get tosee it all close up and observe Alex for a few minutes before such an important event.

The show took place at pier 94 which is a massive old airplane hanger. The runway was concrete and y-shaped which was wet all through the center, ringing true to Wang’s edgy aesthetic.

The collection was brilliant. He combined 90's vampire-esque pinstripes, studs, thigh high socks, bootcuts, backpacks (with flowing chiffon scarves), and chunky boots that reminded me of something I had in elementary school. Very updated ‘The Craft’ with finer tailoring.

Such a treat to see Freja, Agy, and Abbey walk as well as Jessica Miller’s quiet return to the catwalk. Lots of love to m.k. for making it all possible.

A Wang Day

I am so indescribably excited for the Alexander Wang show this afternoon. I promise to post lots of pictures and update on some of the other amazing shows I've been at in the past 2 days. Fashion week has been, as expected, a complete race where I'm constantly both coming and going, but I am so grateful to be able to be involved.

For those of you in nyc who don't have the hottest ticket in town today, you can see the Wang show projected on the American Eagle Screen in Times Square at 6pm. For the rest of you, check it out streaming LIVE on www.showstudio.com at 5pm.
