Accidental Treasure

I find it extremely difficult to take pictures at fashion shows from anywhere but the photographers pit (see my earlier post on Willow for more on my pit experience). Whether its a speedy model, poor lighting, a seat too close, or one too far, I always manage to end up with an album that is 95% blurry, crooked, and downright bad.
I took the photo above during the packed Joe Fresh show at LGFW last month. It captures nothing I hoped it would. Right away however I could tell that it was one of the exceptions. A photo so bad its good. Something about the blurry audience and the model's fire red hair against the white fur coat made me fall in love with this shot.

Ice Ice Baby

35 Ice sculptors
6 Days
15 Trucks
265 Tonnes of snow and ice flown in from Scandinavia

That is what it took Karl Lagerfeld to completely transform The Grand Palais into the arctic wonderland that acted as the backdrop for Chanel's A/W 2010 show.  The ability to dream and act with such grandeur says a lot about Karl Lagerfeld's imagination, creativity, perception, and budget. He reinvented the classic tweed jacket (with fur trim), updated the 2.55 bag (with fur patches), and re-imagined evening bags (as fur snowballs).  Most surprising however was that the yeti boots, fur trousers, fur bags and mohair coats were all faux. "It's so good now, technical advances are so prefect you can hardly tell fake fur from the real thing...Fake is not chic--but fake fur is" explained Karl backstage after the show. Personally, I've always preferred real fur, and worn my grandmother's hand-me-down's (including a beautiful white Dior mink thankyouverymuch) proudly--but if the faux is good enough for Karl, it's good enough for me.

Overly excessive? Maybe.
A statement on global warming? Unlikely.
Completely crazy Karl and unprecedented? Definitely.

Parson’s graduates Sophie Buhai and Lisa Maycock of Vena Cava are one of my favorite New York fashion duos. (I also die a little for the irony of my other favorite duo, the lumberjacks who design Costello Tagliapietra). Their show at Milk was a true to their usual style: subtle, ladylike, and cool without being overly trendy.
Some of my favorite elements:
  • The Like performing at the top of the runway providing a live soundtrack
  • The pink, green and purple streaks in the girls ponytails (I can totally see Topshop selling rainbow hairpieces for fall). With all the crazy birdsnest hairdo’s on the runways this is totally rockable, runway to street hair .
  • Vintage inspired accessories, sunglasses and hats
  • Amazing prints [looks 3,5,13] and interesting cuts [looks 10,14, 21] (2 things we can we can always count on Vena Cava for)
  • Lots of Fur
